Job description

Support Scientist - NPP/JPSS NUCAPS EDR Algorithm Support

NOA1781
NOAA/NESDIS/STAR
College Park, MD

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), a science and technical company supporting U.S. Federal Government, located in Rockville, Maryland is currently seeking to hire a support scientist to join our team efforts to support NOAA/NESDIS/Center for Satellite Applications Research (STAR).  IMSG supports STAR in applied science research and development efforts in a semi-research and semi-operational working environment along with U.S. government scientists, visiting scientists, and other contractors. This task is to assist with the refinement and application of NOAA NUCAPS products from polar orbiting weather satellites.

General Requirements/Duties:

The NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS) was developed to generate (1) spectrally and spatially thinned radiances, (2) retrieved products such as profiles of temperature, moisture, trace gases and cloud-cleared radiances, and (3) global validation products such as radiosonde matchups and gridded radiances and profiles. These products are derived from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) and Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) currently onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite and later will be available from the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS-1 and JPSS-2).

The position will primarily support the NUCAPS development team in the areas of product validation, quality control, and applications development. An emphasis of the effort is on testing algorithm refinements to enhance the utility of the NUCAPS products produced in near-real time from the JPSS.

The position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to global environmental satellite research critical to NOAA’s Weather Ready Nation program. Expected deliverables include the following

  • Evaluate NUCAPS vertical temperature and water vapor product improvements using a combination of coincident radiosondes, aircraft takeoff/descent profiles, and surface observations
  • Improvement of product NUCAPS quality control (QC) indicators in the atmospheric boundary layer.
  • Provide ancillary inputs to the NUCAPS algorithm from hourly surface observations in the CONUS region.
  • Experimental demonstration of near-real time applications of NUCAPS data using Direct Broadcast for severe weather forecasting.
  • Present summary of work at scientific meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Atmospheric Science.
  • Ability to engage in small group interactions on a daily basis.
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work and reason independently.
  • Interest and/or background in severe storm forecasting.
  • Experience in meteorological satellite remote sensing including;
    • near-real time direct broadcast of NOAA/NASA polar orbiting satellite data,
    • near-real time surface observations in the US and Canada,
    • scripting of automated processes in Linux,
    • MATLAB or other scientific programming languages,
    • visualization of meteorological quantities

Please note this position requires a US citizenship and willingness to undergo a security background check.
