Two-year, grant funded position.

BASIC FUNCTION

To advance prediction of power outages related to wet snow and ice storms through research on winter precipitation (QPF, phase), application of wet snow and ice accretion methods, and development of new technologies to operationalize key results for Vermont electric utilities.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Develop storm monitoring products of wet snow and ice accretion/loading using radar and surface observations.
  • Derive and verify wet snow and ice accretion techniques from NWP output.
  • Verify hydrometeor phase and precipitation amount for mesoscale NWP models.
  • Use NWP post-processing to maximize skillful prediction of surface dry and wet bulb temperatures.
  • Relate storm outage signatures to snow and ice loading, right-of-way vegetation coverage, and infrastructure characteristics to explain faults.
  • Use various data analytics (e.g., machine learning) to relate historic storm outage signatures to optimize NWP predictability.
  • Develop software to apply and operationalize key research results.
  • Participate in project meetings, present research at conferences, publish research and/or develop new technology.  
  • Related duties as assigned.  

Requirements:

Ph.D. in a quantitative field (Physics/Math/Meteorology/Computer Science) desirable; M.S. will be considered.

  • Strong background in data analytics.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Python, ArcGIS, and/or other suitable platforms .
  • Experience with post-processing and analysis of NWP data sets using graphical display tools (i.e., GrADS, Matplotlib, etc.).
  • Evidence of deliverables (publications, derived products, technology advancements, etc.).
  • Positive team player.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with winter weather prediction (precipitation type, amount, orographic effects).
  • Fluency with gridded meteorological/geoscience data formats (GRIB, NetCDF, HDF, etc.).
  • Proficiency working with NEXRAD dual-pol products.
  • Some experience running WRF model.
  • Familiarity with Vermont winters and geography.
  • Familiarity with electric utilities and electrical engineering.
